Hooks and Bonefishing

I’m fishing for cutthroat in the Rockies this week, so my mind is definitely not on bonefish.  But over the last few days I have broken two hooks on fish and straightened out two others……which did in fact bring my mind around to bonefishing. Myself and others have had a bad stretch with hooks in the tropics over the last couple of years.  With a number of hooks straightening out or breaking.  I always find that odd, since we normally use twelve pound tippet.  A hook straightens before twelve pound will break?   Just not right. I get asked to field test products and I have tested many hooks. My advice, don’t gamble with cheap hooks.    I fish solely with top end hooks. One other piece of advice, use a waterproof box and identify each fly you used during the day, so that you can thoroughly rinse it with fresh water and dry it before putting it back in the box. When I switch flies I simply cut it off above the loop knot.  Every fly I use during the day still has the loop attached when put back in the box.  Others have different ways to identify their “used” fly, the important thing is to rinse them at the end of the day and the hooks will stay as strong as when you bought them.
