I was going to start off the season today talking about flies to use on DIY flats that get heavily fished, but then got gobsmacked by this bonefish and story sent to me by a subscriber. Thought you would enjoy this fish tale way more then a #6 Greg’s Flats Fly. Below is a repeat of the story as sent to me by Dave Lawrence along with a couple of pics. But what a fish !!!!! “Hi Rod. I caught this bonefish in Cayo Romano Cuba in late December 2012. It was caught on 15 lb maxima green leader and a size 6 tan gotcha. This was one of three large fish cruising towards us as I fished from a 18 foot flats boat. I fished with a local guide legend who works directly for the Cuban Government. I also landed several smaller bones that day none smaller than 6 lbs. I was also fortunate to have two large permit hit my crab fly but unfortunately they both blew my 15lb test up on the second run. With the bonefish, we didn’t have a tape measure but we were able to cut a piece of mono to measure and it came in at 37 inches. Certainly the biggest bone I have ever caught and also biggest fish to date on fly landed. As I felt fortunate to have caught this fish, I was equally happy to release it back to where it belongs. The nice thing about this area is there is no commercial fishing in this area as it is a natural area and also little pressure. I didn’t see another boat other than the party who joined us through the guide. We stayed at Cayo Guillermo at a typical Cuban all inclusive but the highlight of the trip was the Bonefishing. I definitely will return to this area.” Thanks Dave
